Life Off Autopilot: Creating Space for What Matters to YOU
Hey Achiever!
When was the last time you did something purely because it mattered to YOU?
Not because someone expected it, not because it was the "responsible" thing to do, but because it truly aligned with what brings you joy or you find meaningful? If you're having trouble remembering… you're not alone. As women, we often find ourselves making choices based on others' needs and expectations, societal "shoulds," and what we think we're supposed to want. We wake up, follow our routines, respond to everyone else's needs, and before we know it, another day has passed without making space for what truly matters to us.
Here's the exciting truth: you can break free from this pattern. And I promise—adding meaning to your day is easier than you might think. I want to help you discover what truly matters to YOU and make space for it in your life.
“Understanding Your "Meaningful"
Before we can add more meaningful achievements to our days, we need to understand what "meaningful" means to YOU. This isn't about what Instagram or Pinterest says should be fulfilling to you or what your friend finds rewarding—it's about what lights YOU up inside.
Take a moment to reflect:
- What activities make you lose track of time?
- When do you feel most like yourself?
- What would you do more of if nobody was watching or judging?
- What did you love doing before life got "too busy"?
These questions might take time to answer, especially if you've been on autopilot for a while. That's okay! Let's use my framework to help you rediscover and reclaim your meaningful moments.
Set YOUR Intention
This is where we dig into YOUR "why." Why do you want to add more meaningful activities to your life? Keep asking yourself "why" until you reach the heart of it:Want to add meaningful activities → Want to feel more fulfilled → Want to stop living for others' expectations → Want to rediscover my own joy → BECAUSE when I'm always doing what others expect, I feel disconnected from myself and my own dreams.
Craft YOUR Plan
Now comes the exciting part—creating space for meaningful achievements in your daily life. But here's where many of us get stuck: we try to make huge changes all at once, then feel overwhelmed and retreat to our comfortable, familiar autopilot.
Instead, let's start small but significant. Choose ONE meaningful activity you want to add to your life. Remember: this isn't about adding another "should" to your list.
It's about choosing something that brings YOU joy, fulfillment, or peace.
Celebrate YOUR Achievements
Every time you choose meaning over autopilot, it's a win worth celebrating! Notice and acknowledge when you:
- Say "no" to an obligation to say "yes" to something meaningful
- Stick to your 15-minute commitment
- Resist the urge to check emails/texts/notifications during your designated meaningful time
- Feel more energized after spending time on what matters to you
- Inspire someone else to add meaningful moments to their day
What Becomes Possible When You Create Meaningful Space
As you start adding meaningful achievements to your days, you might notice something magical happening. You might:
Feel more energized and inspired
Make decisions with more confidence
Set boundaries more easily
Find yourself naturally prioritizing what matters
Inspire others to live more intentionally
Discover new aspects of yourself you'd forgotten
Most importantly, you might find yourself feeling more like YOU again.
It honestly doesn't take much, you just need to get started. The key to creating space for your meaningful achievements is to starting small. Try setting aside just 15 minutes—you’d be surprised at how much you can accomplish in that time! Pick a specific time in your day to do this, like right after your morning coffee, to make it a habit. Expect some pushback, both from yourself ("I should be doing something else") and from others ("Don't you usually help me with...?"). To help you stick with it, think about who can support you in this change. Having someone to cheer you on can make all the difference. Just like you’d want to support a friend in their goals, reaching out for help can make your journey easier and more fun!
***Tip on how to ask - be specifically what you're trying to add and why it matters: "I'm working on adding more creativity to my life because I miss how alive I feel when I'm creating. Could you check in with me on Sundays about whether I've made time for my art this week? And maybe remind me how excited I was when I first talked about getting back to painting?"
But Who Has The Time?!
I hear you thinking: "This all sounds great, Adrienne, but I barely have time to breathe as it is!" Trust me, I get it. Taking your life off autopilot can feel daunting, even when you know you're not loving the current flight pattern. After all, some things are non-negotiable - the kids have to get to school by 8, so that 7:30 AM yoga class just isn't happening right now.
If this is the case for you, here's where we can get creative! Adding meaning doesn't always mean adding more time to your day. Instead, think about how you can transform the moments you already have:
Could you listen to that inspiring podcast while folding laundry or doing dishes?
What if you worked on a crossword puzzle with your morning coffee instead of scrolling?
Could your commute become your language learning time?
What if meal prep became your reading time through audiobooks?
Look for small changes that can replace something that doesn't bring you joy with something that does.
Your Next Step: Choose Your Meaningful
Ready to add more meaningful achievements to your days, by choosing to fill your moments differently? Start with just ONE thing that matters to you. Something small enough to feel doable but meaningful enough to feel exciting. Need to find a bigger block of time for something more meaningful? Go back and do a time audit (I wrote all about this in my "Stop Hiding Behind 'Too Busy'" post) to see where you might have pockets of time between the required things that could be transformed into meaningful moments.
Just remember: This isn't about squeezing more into your already full days. It's about taking your life off autopilot and being intentional with the time you do have, even if it's just 15 minutes here and there. If you're finding it challenging to identify what's meaningful to you or create space for it in your life, let's connect. I want to help YOU discover what brings YOU joy and create a strategy to make it happen. Because YOU deserve a life filled with meaningful achievements that truly matter to YOU, not autopilot.
