Family Goals: Turning Everyday Moments into Meaningful Achievements
Hey Achiever!
Have you ever noticed how your personal goals sometimes feel at odds with family life?
You're trying to establish a morning workout routine, but getting your kids' out the door and to school keeps derailing your plans. Or perhaps you've been wanting to start that side business, but family time always (rightfully!) takes priority. What if I told you that instead of seeing family life and personal goals as competing forces, we could transform them into a powerful partnership?
Today, let's talk about something that's close to my heart: how to turn goal-setting into a family adventure that brings everyone closer while helping each person grow. And yes, I promise it's not just possible—it's easier than you might think and can actually be fun!
The Magic of Family Goals
Busy parents (especially my moms out there) often feel like they're taking away from our families when they're pursuing their meaningful achievements. But when we bring our families into our growth journey... that's when the real magic happens!
Think about it: Your kids are natural goal-setters. Remember when your little one was determined to learn to ride a bike or climb the tree in the back yard? Or when they practiced writing their name over and over until they got it just right? They already understand the joy of achievement—we just need to channel that energy into intentional family growth. It will help the family for a stronger more successful unity and get your family to better support and priorities your goals too.
Starting with Your Family's North Star: Values
Before we jump into specific goals, let's talk about something even more fundamental: your family values. These are like your family's North Star—they guide your decisions and help you stay on course, especially when life gets busy.
Take a moment to think: What matters most to your family? Maybe it's:
Quality Time (making those everyday moments count)
Learning (always growing together)
Health and Wellness (taking care of our bodies and minds)
Adventure (trying new things as a team)
Creativity (expressing ourselves and problem-solving together)
These values become your foundation for setting meaningful family goals and making daily decisions that align with what matters most to your family.
Turning Values into Daily Choices
Here's where it gets practical. Let's look at how different values might shape your family's daily life:
If Quality Time is a core value:
Making dinner together becomes more than just meal prep—it's a daily opportunity to connect
Car rides transform into storytelling sessions
Weekend errands become mini-adventures together
If Learning is your family's focus:
Bedtime routines include reading together
Family game night features strategy games that challenge everyone
Dinner conversations include sharing something new each person learned that day
Setting Family Goals That Stick
Ready to turn these values into actual goals? Here's how to make it work for everyone:
Make it a Family Meeting (But Make it Fun!)
Gather around with snacks (everything's better with snacks!)
Let everyone share their ideas
Use colorful markers and big paper to make it visual
Keep it short and energetic for younger kids
Start Small and Specific
Instead of: "We want to be healthier"
Try: "We'll try one new vegetable as a family each week" or "We'll have a 10-minute family dance party every day after dinner"
Make it Visual and Track Progress Together
Create a family goal board where everyone can see it
Let kids add stickers or check marks for completed goals
Take pictures of your family working toward goals
Celebrate small wins together!
Real Family Goal Examples That Work
Let me share some goals I've seen work with families:
The Reading Family:
The family set a goal to read a book a month as a family and two books each a month. For the family books, the boys picked a series they could both read aloud and read after dinner a few times a week. For the nights not everyone was home, they read their individual books. And They tracked their progress with a paper chain in the living room—removing one link for each book completed.
The Kitchen Crew:
They set a goal to try 12 new recipes as a family in a year—one per month. Kids helped choose recipes, shop for ingredients, and even got to be "head chef" for their chosen meals. Additionally they were only getting take out once a week and eating a vegetable with every dinner.
Making it Work in Real Life
Remember: The key isn't perfection—it's progress and connection. Some weeks you'll crush your goals, and others might feel like you're barely keeping up. That's okay! The real win is doing it together.
Quick Tips for Success:
Keep goals visible (post them where everyone can see)
Build them into your existing routines
Make checking in fun (maybe during Sunday breakfast?)
Celebrate effort as much as achievement
Be flexible and adjust as needed
Your Next Step
This week, I challenge you to gather your family and start a conversation about your values. What matters most to your family? What kind of adventures do you want to have together? What would you like to learn or achieve as a team? Think about when your family has the most fun together, and make more meaningful moments around those times.
Every family's journey looks different, and that's exactly how it should be. Your goals should reflect YOUR family's values, interests, and dynamics. If you are struggling to figure out what goals would work best for your family, lets connect! I love to help facilitate discussions and craft a plan! YOU and your family deserve to grow, achieve, and celebrate together in a way that works for YOUR unique situation.
