The 'Good Enough' Mindset: How Perfectionists Can Overcome Procrastination

December 10, 20245 min read

Hey Achiever!

Would you say you are a perfectionist?

For all my fellow perfectionists out there, it might be holding you back.  I want to start by sharing something personal (I promise it is relevant) - I've been a perfectionist my whole life.  You know the type: good grades, detailed checklists, carefully laid plans, ALWAYS on time - I know where everything is in the house even if I haven't seen/used it in months. (Maybe I just have a good memory too!) My mom used to tell me, "One day everything isn't going to go according to your plan and you're going to fall apart."

And you know what… She was kinda right! Though it took me a while to realize it.

After college, there was no longer a clear plan of things to work towards and my life felt like it was on pause. I was "busy," filling my time caring for others and dealing with medical issues. But really, I was stuck in the perfectionist's trap of waiting for everything to be just right before moving forward.

Sound familiar? Well, getting started on your meaningful achievements is easier than you think, I promise.  I want to help you stop procrastinating and get started on your goals!

Perfect Procrastination

Maybe you've found yourself in a similar situation - life on hold, waiting for the perfect moment to chase your dreams, or even waiting for inspiration to come to you.  Maybe your days feel too full and you are exhausted thinking about all the to do’s of the day and everything you need to do for everyone else.

I get it - I’ve been there.

Here's what I've learned: there's no such thing as the perfect time, the perfect plan, or the perfect way to achieve your goals.  You just have to start.

While planning is important (and you know I love a good framework), at some point, perfect planning becomes perfect procrastination. So how do you move forward?

The Truth About "Good Enough"

Having been on both sides of this journey I get it - as a perfectionist myself and as a guide who helps others achieve their goals here’s the truth: "Good enough" isn't settling – it's strategic! When you embrace "good enough" to get started, you're actually setting yourself up for better success than if you waited for perfect conditions.

Speaking from experience, I'm still working on this "good enough" mindset myself. In fact, that's exactly how Meaningful Achievements came to be and why you are seeing it today in its less than perfect state.

I realized that if I waited until everything was perfect - the perfect website, the perfect workshops and course, the perfect blog posts, Instagram posts, etc - YOUR dreams might get delayed. For me, that thought was more powerful than my fear of putting out something that wasn't 100% perfect.

Breaking Free from the Perfectionism Trap

If you thrived in school like I did, you might find it particularly challenging to navigate goals without clear external guidelines. It's different when you're the one who needs to generate the ideas, create the plan, and follow through to completion. But luckily I have a framework to help get you started on your "good enough" actions and plan - because waiting for perfection could mean waiting forever.

Your goals are worth starting TODAY and I have support for you if you need it!

Ready to move from perfectly procrastinating (aka planning) to celebrating meaningful achievements? Here's how to start:

1. Set Your Goal (Imperfectly!)

Instead of crafting the perfect goal statement, start with the basics: What do you want to achieve and why? Your 'why' doesn't need to be profound – it just needs to be yours. If you can only articulate it roughly right now, that's okay! You can refine it as you go.

2. Craft Your Plan (Simply!)

Rather than creating an elaborate plan that accounts for every possible option/situation, start with just these questions:

- What's a small step I can take today?

- What would "good enough" progress look like this week?

- Who could help me stay on track?

3. Take Action (Now!)

This is where the magic happens. Instead of waiting for perfect conditions, take one small step right now. Then celebrate that step. You're already making progress - it does not have to be done or perfect to celebrate it.

*Bonus - Accountability (Trust me!) Sharing goals you just started can be hard, especially if you’re not completely sure how you’ll achieve it.  Nevertheless, having someone in your corner can make taking that first imperfect step feel a little less scary. Check out my blog post about finding the accountability you need to hit your meaningful achievements; I go into more details about where you can find the right accountability for YOU.

Time to start!

What goal have you been waiting to pursue until everything is "perfect"? What would it look like to start with "good enough" instead? Run through the three easy steps above and start today.

Let’s turn ‘perfect someday’ into ‘good enough today’ into ‘I did it tomorrow’.

Every achievement has to start somewhere, don't wait for perfection. Your goals are worth taking an imperfect step to get started. If you're finding it hard to take that first step alone, let’s chat. I'm here to help YOU transform YOUR perfect plans into real progress towards YOUR next meaningful achievement.
