From Fear to Confidence: The Power of Sharing Your Goals

November 26, 20246 min read

Hey Achiever!

Are you afraid to share your goals?

I am going to guess you might be hesitant to share your goals with others, because many people are.  We live in a world where we only see the perfect parts of people’s lives, so being vulnerable with an area where you aren’t where you want to be can feel scary.

It might come from the fear of judgment or maybe you are not confident in your own abilities to hit the goal.  Regardless of what might have held you back in the past, I am here to help you see it doesn't need to keep holding you back.

Sharing your goals is a form of accountability and a HUGE step towards your
meaningful achievements. Let me start by saying I am here to support YOU and sharing YOUR goals can be easier than you think!

Understanding Your Fears

Do you know why you are afraid to share your goals, even with the people close to you? The fear comes from one of two places.
1. What YOU think others will think:

  • Fear of judgement

  • Uncertainty of how others reactions

  • Fear of unsolicited advice

  • Fear of pressure or future comments

  • Fear of belittlement/unacceptance

2. Your own doubts around the goal and yourself:

  • Lack of confidence

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Remembering past failures

  • Feeling lack of significance

If one of these fears are your’s, you’re not alone. These are some of the common reasons people shy away from sharing their goals.  But they don't need to hold YOU back from sharing your goals and getting support.

When you are confident in your ability to achieve your goals, it becomes a lot easier to share them with those around you and ask for the accountability and support you’d like and need. Have you ever heard “we are our own worst critics”? It’s usually true... most people struggle with self-talk (internal dialogue), but if we heard someone else saying the things we think, we would see how inaccurate they are.

So how do you become confident in your goals?

The Power of Setting Meaningful and Achievable Goals

Working through your own doubts first means finding confidence in your ability to achieve your goals. Working through my framework will allow you to set
meaningful goals you’ll be excited to work towards, because they align with your values.  You will create an action plan to ease the overwhelm you might normally feel with a new goal.  And you will anticipate roadblocks that have stopped you in the past and have a plan with how to think about and resolve obstacles.

When all these parts are in place, all you are missing is the accountability and support to get to your
meaningful achievements.

Accountability comes in many forms:
when you open up about your goals, you create opportunities for support and encouragement.  This is where telling others your goals is the necessary next step.  While you are excited and prepared, share your goal with someone you know will be supportive.  Explain to them your goal and your ‘why’. Ask for their support and let them know how best they can hold you accountable in a meaningful way.  (You would do that for them, wouldn’t you?)

If they have questions about your goal, don't assume they aren't supportive: they haven’t thought about this for as long as you have.  Questions from a loved one usually come from a place of wanting to understand, not interrogate or belittle.

Start the conversation and you might be surprised by how much others want to support you!

Find and Embrace Accountability

Accountability is a powerful tool in your journey, and it doesn’t stop with just sharing your goals with loved ones. While friends and family can provide invaluable support, there are many other place to look for accountability that can help you stay motivated and focused.

1. Join a Community or Group: Look for local or online groups that align with your goals. Whether it’s a fitness class, a book club, or a professional organization, being part of a community with shared aspirations can provide a sense of belonging. You’ll find encouragement from others who understand your journey and can celebrate your progress alongside you, plus another level of motivation when you see others hitting similar goals!

2. Find a Mentor or Coach: Consider seeking out a mentor or coach who has experience in the area you’re pursuing. They can offer guidance, provide constructive feedback, and help you navigate challenges. A mentor’s insights can be invaluable as you work toward your goals, and their support can help you stay accountable (in a way that feels like their job-since it is) as the follow up is more expected.

3. Use Social Media or Online Platforms: Don’t underestimate the power of social media! Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or dedicated forums can be great places to share your goals and connect with like-minded individuals. Many people find motivation in sharing their progress online and receiving encouragement from a wider audience (even if you are anonymous).

4. Accountability Partners: Partner up with someone who shares similar goals. This could be a colleague, a friend, or even someone you connect with online. Check in with each other regularly to discuss progress, challenges, and of course wins. Having a dedicated accountability partner can make the journey feel less isolating and like you can share more openly about your struggles.

5. Create a Vision Board or Journal: Sometimes, the accountability you need comes from you, or your future self. Creating a vision board or keeping a journal can help you track your progress and reflect on your journey. Visual reminders of your goals can keep you motivated, and writing about your experiences can help clarify your thoughts and feelings.

Remember, accountability comes in many forms, and the key is to find what resonates with you. By actively seeking out different types of support, you can create a network that empowers YOU to reach YOUR meaningful achievements.
