Sustainable Success: How Small Wins Fuel Your Big Goals
Hey Achiever!
Do you celebrate small wins?
Let’s talk about something under-appreciated: the power of small wins. Life can get tough, and when you’re in a challenging season, it’s easy to feel like you’re not making any progress. But here’s the truth: small wins are still wins, and they matter more than you think.
Small wins are the ‘what it takes’ to achieve your big goal. Because unless your goal is to win the lottery (although it would be nice… I wouldn't suggest this ‘goal’ for a lot of reasons), you are probably going to have to put in a little work to reach your Meaningful Achievements.
In these 6 sections I break down small wins so you too can see the power in them. And I promise it is easier than you think. I want to help you see your wins are worth celebrating, all of them!
The Importance of Small Wins
We all have those days when our goals feel out of reach. Maybe you’re juggling work, family, and everything in between, and it seems like there’s no time for your personal goals. That’s where small wins come in! These little achievements are what keep us moving forward, even when the big milestones seem far away.
Let’s say you want to read 20 books this year. It might feel overwhelming to think about finding the time to read so much when you’ve only finished 2 books in the last 2 years, but if you commit to just 20 minutes of reading each day, you’re already on your way. Those small chunks of time add up and help you build a habit that can lead to bigger achievements without feeling like a chore.
The Power of Habit Building
Imagine this: you set a goal to read more this year, aiming for 20 books by the end of the year. Instead of pressuring yourself to finish 2 books in your first month, start with that 20-minute daily commitment. This small, manageable goal can become a regular part of your routine. As you make reading a habit, you’ll find that those minutes turn into hours, and before you know it, you might even surpass your original goal!
The beauty of this approach is that it allows you to celebrate the small victories along the way. Finished a chapter? That’s worth a little celebration! Finished a third book in a month? That’s worth a celebration too! Each time you pick up a book, you’re reinforcing the idea that small actions lead to significant progress.
Creating Manageable Milestones
Let’s talk about milestones. Setting smaller goals along the way can make the journey feel a lot more manageable. If you’re aiming to read 20 books, consider setting a goal to finish one book a month. Each time you complete a book, take a moment to reflect on what you learned and how it’s contributing to your growth.
Now 1 book a month wont get you to your 20 book goal... but not every month will only be one. Throughout the year we have times when we can do more, and other times when we struggle to do bare minimums. And thats okay! Plus even if you can only read one a month, that 12 books at the end of the year: when you hadn’t done anything close to that in the last couple years.
This practice not only helps you stay motivated but also gives you the chance to reward yourself. Maybe treat yourself to cozy-up your reading nook with a new blanket or coffee mug, or a new book to dive into next! Celebrating these milestones keeps the momentum going and reminds you that you’re making progress.
Celebrate Every Win, Big and Small
If this isn't the theme of this whole post... but you should celebrate every win. Acknowledging your small wins is a game-changer. Each time you meet a minor goal, take a moment to celebrate. This recognition boosts your motivation and reinforces the positive habits you’re building. Keep a journal to jot down your achievements, big or small, and reflect on how each one contributes to your larger goals.
For example, when you finish your first book of the year, celebrate that victory! Maybe share it with a friend or treat yourself to a special coffee. These little celebrations remind you that every step counts, and you’re on the way to achieving your meaningful goals!
Shift Your Perspective
Success isn’t just about the major goal; it’s about the journey and who you become on the journey. When you shift your focus from the big picture to the small steps you take every day, you’ll find that challenges become part of the process rather than roadblocks.
Every time you carve out those 20 minutes for reading, you’re making progress. Embrace the idea that each effort, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goals. This perspective shift will help you stay resilient, especially during times when it is harder to keep up: when it's harder to make time and stay motivated.
Connect with Your “Why”
Finally, staying connected to your “why” is essential. Understanding why you set your goals in the first place helps keep you focused and motivated. Your “why” is what fuels your determination and reminds you to celebrate each small win along the way.
For your reading goal, maybe your “why” is to expand your knowledge or simply enjoy stories that inspire you. Keeping this motivation in mind will help you push through those days when sticking to your goal feels tough.
